SONY PXW-FS7 camera embodies years of intensive work of developers with the participation of documentary videographers. For ease of use, manufacturers have completely modernized the grip handle, improved the viewfinder, optimized balance and correctly thought out ergonomics. Of course, FS7 camera takes into account Sony’s experience in developing 4K and HD codecs, Super 35 sensors and recording to a memory card. The result of these efforts was a camera that is perfect for documentary filming – the best tool for filming TV shows, reality shows, online broadcasts and much more.

Recording in RAW and Apple ProRes 422 formats, as well as the use of multiple cameras with Sony extension unit

To save the small size, weight and ease of use of PXW-FS7, Sony engineers brought some features to the external module, XDCA-FS7 extension unit, which can be purchased separately. This unit has the following functions: 

Recording in RAW format. XDCA-FS7 allows you to save color, contrast and resolution of the original frames. To do this, you need to connect an external recorder (sold separately) and start recording in RAW format. XDCA-FS7 supports 12-bit RAW format, which is characterized by excellent color reproduction, in the resolution of 2K and 4K. To connect the XDCA-FS7 to the HXR-IFR5 interface unit and the AXS-R5 recorder (both devices are sold separately), one BNC cable is enough. This interface also allows the use of compatible third-party external recorders, including ATOMOS Shogun and Convergent Design® Odyssey 7Q, which support the Sony FS RAW recording format. Even when recording RAW video to an external recorder, you can record time-synchronized recording to internal media and then edit these materials offline. 

Record in Apple ProRes 422. We understand that some companies only use their workflows Apple ProRes 422 codec. Therefore, XDCA-FS7 supports Apple ProRes 422 and Apple ProRes 422 HQ – recording video with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 on the XQD ™ card installed in the camera. 

Work with multiple cameras. XDCA-FS7 also has Timecode I/O and external synchronization capabilities for multi-camera shooting.

Convenient placement on the shoulder without the use of additional devices

Surprisingly, for the optimal operation of the so-called budget cameras often require expensive accessories, grips and additional viewfinders. PXW-FS7 is a different matter. It has a completely new design that provides comfortable placement on the shoulder or at chest level. The controls for scaling, recording, start/stop and settings are conveniently located on the folding grip handle. Sony has provided the camera with an optimal viewfinder located on the left, with support for a wide range of longitudinal adjustment.
